I am looking for an instructional book or DVD that includes the why, where and how much weight can/should be added to a club head to affect the ball flight characteristics [right, left, up, down]
Not sure there is a comprehensive chart or document on weight adjustment and it’s effect. I can tell you that our experience and testing on irons tells us that 10 grams of weight added toe, heel or up or down will only move the cg approximately 1 mm. 10 grams is a lot of weight to add with lead tape and equals 5 swingweights. So, while adding lead tape or other kinds of weight to an iron head for “feel” adjustment or tweaking of swingweight is very common, adding weight to an iron head to try to manipulate the ball flight will not yield measureable results, at least in our testing and experience. In drivers, fairway woods and hybrids, generally you can get more movement because the percentage of weight to the total weight of the heads that you can move is greater and the distance you can move the weight is greater because the heads volumes are larger than irons. Still, you have to be aware of what adding additional weight will do to the feel and the flex of the club. If you simply are moving weight and not adding weight, you could influence the ball flight to a more noticeable amount on woods. Generally speaking, adding or moving weight to the toe will promote a fade, to the heel will promote a draw, higher will lower trajectory, lower will increase trajectory. More forward can lower trajectory and reduce spin, while more rearward will increase trajectory and can increase spin. There are other factors and details in the design and materials of a wood that can effect how much these general effects produce changes, but that should give you the basics of what you could see. Also, the ball type definitely plays a roll in the trajectory and spin. Hope this helps.
