LOFT FOR LOFT, which of your iron heads flies highest? Which spins most?
I am open to everything from TS4 to M980. I currently play TS2. I’m a ball-first sweeper. Stopping power is poor for me at 70 ish MPH. I realize that comes with the low swing speed but I could do with more height and/or spin.
I know about loft, shafts, and choice of ball. But what can the iron head design get me? Thanks.
Loft is the major factor in height. The M980 would be the highest launching iron. TS4 is the same loft at 33 deg. if you like a more traditional blade, but it has a slightly higher vertical cg which plays a minor factor. The TS3 is a degree stronger (7i – 32 deg.), but has a slightly lower vertical CG than the M980, so it could be a contender. Still, loft is the major factor. From a more traditional blade profile, the TE+ could be another contender due to it’s loft (7i – 32 deg.) and it’s slightly lower vertical cg as well.
TS2 was 30 deg. on the the #7 iron and had a higher vertical cg than all of the irons above, so not surprising it is more difficult for you to hit higher. You mentioned you know about shafts (flex, weight, profile) and choice of ball, so go with what you know. More flex, lighter weight, and a ball that spins more, as well as the higher lofted iron. All of those can contribute.

I’ve hit almost every iron head. Personally, I went from the TS2 to the TS4, and i noticed the TS4 flies higher.. Interestingly I went to the heavier Score shaft from the Nippon 890GH. To me the highest flying head is the TE (not counting the M890 – that is by far higher launching than any)
