I just got the set of iron and havent hit them yet- I saw the screw on top and Im wondering if there is a purpose here- tightening or loosening?

It’s an adjustable weight meant to allow for weight adjustment if needed. Should be tight. Might check to be sure they are tight. They usually are and don’t need tightening, but you can check to be sure.

It is a weight screw. There are several interchangable weights available to allow custom swingweights/lengths. It is meant to be completely tight during use.
