Hi Britt,

I recently purchased the TC Pro IST Hybrid H5 Pak. I have been playing the discontinued Hyway 21* and LOVE it. I was looking to get a 5 iron replacement and the IST seemed to be the closest. All components were within acceptable weight tolerances. After assembling it I was really surprised by the total weight and especially the SW. My Hyway U21 sw is C4 (all my irons play between C7-C9), but the IST sw was D6! I removed the 8g weight which reduced it to D1 but still a much different feel from the Hyway. I covered the weight port with lead tape and am working with it but just confused with the results, I’ve never had such a discrepancy before. I’m playing it with Pro Series R shaft at 39″ (all my clubs are 1/2″ short… the old ‘standard’ length) with a Lamkin midsize grip…all of which should reduce the SW. I’m confused…what did I miss?

I have to assume you made the club lengths the same and used the same weight shaft. The main reason the swing weight is different is the head weight. the stock head weight of the U21 was 226 grams. The stock head weight of the TC PRO IST H5 is 256 grams. That’s a lot of difference and would explain the difference in the swing weight. The HWY U21 was meant to have a standard playing length of around 40″ (could be longer). The Pro IST H5 stock length could be around 39″. At 39″, with a 75 gram shaft and 50 gram grip, the swing weight should be around D2. The U21 will be in the C4-5 range at 40″ with the same shaft and grip weight. So the only way to get the swing weight as light as the U21 is to change the weight to as light as possible, which you did, shorten the club length, use a lighter shaft and use a heavier grip or counterbalance the club. A combination of all of these to some degree to get that light of a swing weight. The head weights are just not close enough to get you the same sing weights everything else being equal.
