Is the swingweight of a driver all that important? I have a driver that measures D6 on the swingweight scale. If I were to add weight to the grip end and bring the swingweight down to D0 or even C9 would that result in more club head speed?
Swing weight is based on the weight of the components and the length of the club. You can have a 45 or 45.5 inch driver with a 50 or 60 gram shaft and a 50 gram grip and it have a D6 swing weight. Does not mean the driver is heavy. If you counter balance to bring the swing weight down, you are adding to the total weight of the club. Some believe that this can aid increasing club head speed very slightly. I think it depends on the player. I have tried it and for me I saw no difference in club head speed. It will make the head feel lighter. It all comes down to what you want to feel and how that may effect the way you swing it. Nothing wrong with trying it. You can also simply make the driver shorter. If it is 45 inches and ou make it 44.5, the swing weight will drip approx. 3 swing weight points. I can almost guarantee you will hit a shorter length driver more consistently and probably will not notice any loss of distance. At least that has been my experience with the majority of players I have fit over the years when we shortened the length of the driver.
