Hello – I bought a TS3 7 iron a few months ago and love it so much that I am going to expand the set so I have 6-GW to replace my Titleist T300s. My Titleist T300s are stronger than the TS3 irons, however, so I am having to re-learn my yardages. The Titleist T300 7 iron is 29 degrees for example and the TS3 is 32 degrees.

Just for context, I’m in my mid 50’s and have an 18 handicap. I am not a very long hitter. My driver is about 225-230 and my Titleist T300 7 iron was about 145-150. My new TS3 7iron is 135.

Anyway, I am torn on whether to keep the rest of the TS3 irons at the manufactured lofts or have them all bent 2 degrees stronger when I order. If I do that, I can have the 7 iron I that I bought previously bent locally I suppose so everything matches up. I have never had irons bent before fwiw so I am not sure what other consequences there might be or whether doing so messes with the irons in some other way.

All the major manufacturers have been reducing loft and making clubs longer to kid the customer that their irons go further than the competition. Head weight has barely changed so swing weights have increased making them harder to swing. We should commend Golfworks for not following this trend with game improvement irons. If you need to hit it 145 take a 6 iron (which is only 1 degree stronger than your T300 7 iron).

If you strengthen them 2 degrees, you will reduce the bounce or sole angle by 2 degrees. That will reduce the bounce on the 6, 7 from 3 deg. to 1 deg., the 8, 9 from 4 deg. to 2 deg. and the PW, GW from 5 deg. to 3 deg. They will still have a positive sole angle, but it will be less, making them a little less turf forgiving. Now, if you have a shallow swing plain and / or play on firm turf most of the time, it will not be as big a deal. If you are neutral to steep in your attack angle and play in neutral to softer turf conditions, they may not be quite as turf forgiving. Less bounce tends to dig more in those conditions.

I love the feel of the TS3 7 iron just the way it is, so I think I am not going to mess with it. I’m sure I will get used to the different yardages. The dispersion with my 7 iron is so tight that I am willing to give up a few yards for consistency. That was the one thing I have found with SGI irons – they might be longer but for me, at least, that distance sometimes comes with a consistency price.

Can’t wait to fill out the set!
