I want to try one length short irons because that’s what I have problems with, I hit from 9 iron to lob wedge fat thin and can shank as well. I’m thinking I should use 7 length or longer iron shafts, the question I have is do I trim from the butt only or trim some from the tip. I have a set of regular graphite ping shafts and a set of Srixon medium graphite shafts, or I could use reg steel shafts, just don’t know how to trim a 5 iron shaft to suit 7 iron length. Really appreciate your help, cheers Colin.

First, your Ping shafts are most likely .355 taper tip, so you can’t trim anything from the tip. If your irons are Ping, and I am assuming they are, the only shafts you can use must be .355 taper tip. If you install 7 iron length taper tip shafts into the 8, 9, PW, etc., trimming all to the 7 iron length, the 8, 9, PW etc. will play progressively more flexible because of the head weight progression. Single length irons require the head weights to be all the same for the shaft flexes and swing weights to be the same at the designated single length. Also, in my opinion, making your shorter length irons longer does not make them easier to hit. Suggestion is to have a qualified professional take a look and see if he can help you with your ball striking issues. I would definitely try that before making such a change in my club lengths. It may be that single length clubs could work for you, but they should be proper single length clubs with the head weights and shafts that make that type of set playable.

Sorry Britt I’ve got a set of single length iron heads, I should of said that first go around.
OK. the Ping iron shafts will still be .355 taper tip and you can only trim from the butt. Assuming the head weights are 7 iron head weights, that 5 iron shaft trimmed from the butt for a 7 iron head will play more flexible. If you take an tapered iron shaft meant for a longer iron and it’s lighter head weight and put it in a shorter iron with it’s heavier head weight and trim it shorter from the butt end, it will always play more flexible. If the heads are .370 hosel, the best bet, in my opinion, is to just get the appropriate new parallel tip shaft for the single length your wanting and install them. That way you can tip and butt trim providing the appropriate length and flex.

Thanks Britt, I’m really thankful for your help. I’ve fitted Aldila stiff graphite shafts in the s w 9 8 heads because as you said they become more flexible. I will be trying them out next week and will comment on what happens, cheers Colin
