Does anyone have an idea on how to do this? I am assuming that the opening at the butt of the shaft is too small for a normal size extension.

Really using a wooden dowel the outside diameter of the shaft and sanding down a portion to fit is about the only way. You could take a second shaft, cut it to the extension length you need and find a dowel to fit the inside both the shaft and the extension and piece them together. We are working on an extension that can be used for those shafts because we are getting asked this more and more, but it’s not ready yet. No timeline on it yet.
