I have a set of MacGregor Tourney Silver Scot 985 (1960ish) with original True Temper MacGregor Tourney shafts (5 iron is 37″ and D1). Shaft feels like a medium flex. I want to put the set in play but need to add +2″ to each iron. Not overly concerned with swing weight. Obviously I can just use shaft extensions – Curious if anyone has other recommendations (i.e reshaft with XPS??, Graphite, etc). Thanks
Interesting you want to put these in play. Designs of that era had very long hosels, short blade lengths and cg’s that are generally high and in the heel (due to the long hosel). In short, not very playable/forgiving. That being said, I understand that if it looks good to you, you should give it a try with them fit correctly to you. 2″ extensions is about 1/2″ beyond what I like to recommend anyone do. If you need more than 1 1/2″, you should consider reshafting. There are a lot of steel shaft options and since you are going to about a 1″ over todays modern standard length, you might consider a lighter weight steel shaft. The XP is an option, as are options in the KBS line and the Nippon line. All have lightweight steel options.

I appreciate the response – I was thinking that reshafting might be a better alternative for playability. Goal is to play some golf with persimmon and blades, without having to develop 2 swings. My modern Ping 5 iron is 39 1/4″ and 3.75 * upright. Trying to get somewhat closer to the same specs. I have a loft/lie machine. Thank God its a hobby!
