Looking for an old time shaft extractor for steel shafted persimmon woods (or a new
way to do it). Specifically, 1932 Spalding Robert T. Jones, Jr. Cushion Neck woods.
The old persimmons require the old traditional way of removing shafts. First, you have to remove the whipping. I’m reasonably sure it is a bore through, so you must drill out the bore plug from the sole, drill through the pin inside the shaft, remove the remainder of the pin exposed in the back of the neck, then use a heating rod that is heated and then placed inside the shaft. It can take more than one heating cycle. Once the heating rod has had a chance to do it’s job, you gently attempt to remove the head. Wooden woods can be susceptible to cracking, especially in the neck. Unfortunately, I don’t know of an extractor that can do all the things you have to do to remove an old wooden head from a steel shaft. The good, old fashion way is all I know.
