Hi Britt and team, is there any plan to offer a sole grind comparable to the PTM again on any future offerings? With the huge popularity of the Srixon ZX line and their V sole, it seems like there’s a market for some different sole grinds on forged irons. I love my PTM black set but one day it will bite the dust and I’d love to have a new option.
Don’t confuse popularity with playability. V soles, like the Srixon irons have, are really not that forgiving and limit the positive affects the sole can have on performance. The PTM sole was not a split sole. It had a nice radius on the trailing edge and an exaggerated or more relieved leading edge grind than a lot of irons do, but the sole width and angle were complete and not split. When a sole is split you effectively minimize the effective sole width and bounce. More likely to perform OK on firmer turf conditions, but not as a general, all turf type performer.
We might visit the PTM grind again someday o a design. It was a good one.

The Vokey V grind is very similar to the Tiger grind but it’s only available as a custom option from Wedgeworks. The Callaway Z grind has an aggressive leading edge chamfer and they have a few other grinds with leading edge relief. No irons that I know of with that sort of leading edge relief.
I like the PTM sole grind as well. I put them away for a couple of years in favor of the TS2 and 3 along with the TE + and just brought them back with recoil shafts and love the turf interaction. They don’t have the butter feel but the extra bounce makes them almost impossible to chunk. Put this sole on a butter feel forged iron and you’ll sell a ton.

I wasn’t really implying that Maltby should put out a v-sole club, just that there’s a market for something other than the radiused sole that exists on most Maltby clubs right now. I love the PTM and there’s nothing else really comparable to it out there other than the Tiger Woods grind of the MG3-4 wedges from Taylormade.
