There are several ways and it is not tapered from both ends. It is a long hosel and usually requires more heat gun time. After removing the ferrule, use a good shaft puller and securing the club properly in the puller. You should apply the heat to the back of the hosel, moving it up and down to cover the entire length of the shaft inside the head. Heat for 90 seconds then stop. Apply pressure from the puller to see if you get the head to break free. If not, re-heat for 60 seconds and try again. The epoxy should break free and the shaft should come out. If you are trying to save the shaft, the less heat required the better. More difficult to save shafts coming out of the old Titleist drivers because of the length of the hosel.
Another method is to drill out the bore through plug and using a hot rod heat the shaft fro the inside. We would do this is the shaft is broken off at the hosel, but you can do it even on a complete shaft. After drilling out the bore through plug, heat the heating rod red hot, then place it inside the shaft. After 30 seconds or so, remove the rod and re-heat and place back inside. You can also heat the outside of the hosel with the heat gun as well. If there is enough shaft, this should be done with the use of a shaft puller as well. After heating, apply pressure with the puller and the head should come off.
Hope this helps. If you you are not able to get the shaft out using the above, let me know. There are other ways.
