The difference is not .5 inches. It will be more like .15 inches or 3.8mm. To verify that I just measured current stock. .15″ will have no noticeable effect on the playability of the shafts. I would not trim the tip of the taper tip shafts to try and make up for that small amount. Also, the Taper tips shafts are constant weight, meaning they are the same weight from the longest shaft to the shortest shaft. If you use parallel tip shafts, as you trim the tip for flex and the butt to playing length, the shafts will get progressively lighter in the set. So although the playability will be the same, some players say that the taper tip have a slightly different feel. Not better or worse, just slightly different. I have played both and have tested many players to see if they can tell the difference. Personally I think they do feel slightly different, but noticed no difference in performance. Most players I did the comparison with could not tell the difference. The few that could were really good players with a refined sense of feel.
