Hi,

I have read that Wishon is producing a single-length iron set, with irons 7-5 having high COR faces, to make up fo the loss of distance.

I thought that I could build a single-length iron set with KE4 s heads, as I could combine the weight screws in order to make all the heads weigh the same, but I was wondering if not having high COR faces would really affect distance gapping in the low lofted irons.

I was also wondering if it could be a good idea to use true temper spinner shafts for the entire set, since I like the feeling and the set would be at 36.5 inch length.

Any ideas?

I have been trying to build a same length set for years with no good results until a year ago when I found a set of heads by PinHawk. They are all the same lie and same weight, I build by set at 37.5 in lenght using a filament would shaft built to 280 cpm flex. Each club is exactly the same other than loft. I just love them. OH…Cobra has just introduced their single length club. One thing I really do like about them is the difference of carry between clubs, my single length clubs produce only approximately 8 yards difference between clubs, makes ending up between clubs a thing of the past. My next project is building a club to match or close to the new PXG clubs. I have purchase a DBM Forged 6 Iron as my starting point. A friend ask me why after building a good set of clubs that I start building another set……I just said because I don’t build model planes.

First, I have no real data, nor have I seen any data to support, that a “high COR” face on an iron generates any meaningful distance increase. It is important to understand the more loft you have on a club, any club, the more indirect or oblique the hit is. This means there is less direct impact. The less direct impact, the less affect any kind of face deflection can have on ball speed. I believe the company you referenced is also making the single length set 36.5″. In my opinion, those long irons better have one heck of a high COR and not very much loft to make up for the difference in distance. Again, just an opinion, based on what we understand about the affect of loft and length and face deflection on distance. We have not tested. To answer your question, I do not believe the advertised “high COR” will affect the distance gapping in the low lofted irons. Loft will affect distance gapping far more than any COR in an iron. As far as the Spinner shaft, I suppose you could, even though it was designed for Wedges. Not sure anyone has ever tried.

Today I took a KE4 four iron and put a FST 125 PRO shaft cut at 37″.
I put about 25grams of led tape as i didn’t have heavy enough screws, I moved the lie 2° upright. The shaft was tip trimmed for a 4 iron. The result was very good, although trajectory was slightly lower and I probably lost 5 yards, consistency was higher and so was distance control and direction. I’m tempted to go ahead and but heavy screws and try the full set from 9 to 4 iron leaving out the wedges, as I don’t feel comfortable in using such long shafts on wedges.
I thought of tip trimming the shafts as indicated, each iron with a different stepping, and making the lofts 4° between all irons, including the long ones. I thought of doing so in order to find decent distance gapping. (do you think it’s ok, or should all shafts be equally tip trimmed?)
Any other suggestion?
