I have the preliminary MPF numbers for the Titleist 716 AP1 and AP2 irons. The 716 AP1 iron came out to 732 MPF points, putting it in the Super Game Improvement category. The 716 AP2 iron came out to 418 MPF points, putting it in the Conventional category. The main difference is, and always has been between the previous generations of these models, is the horizontal CG dimension. The AP1 was 1.441 and the AP2 was 1.138. A huge difference. The AP2 is a much smaller profile with a longer hosel, neither of which are features that result in a higher playability. The vertical cg’s were close and the rearward cg’s were not that different either. Even the MOI’s were reasonably close, but that can be misleading as the longer hosel can raise the MOI, but also draws the horizontal cg location towards the heel. In fact the horizontal cg location on the AP2 was .115 towards the heel from the center of the face. The AP1 was .070 towards the heel from the center of the face, which is better, but not perfectly in the center. It may be a few weeks before I have the final numbers, but they will be very close to these. I rarely have a meaningful variation from my preliminary measurements to the final measurements. Again, I apologize for the delay. As we get more models in, I will try and get at least the preliminary numbers done in a more timely manner. Should have the Taylor Made PSi and PSi tour done next.
