When conducting a clubfit with a client, explain why it is important to determine the client’s correct length before determining lie angle.
Quite simply, for every 1/2″ you change the length, the lie angle is effected by 1 degree. Example: You are using a 61 degree lie angle 6 iron at 37.5 inches standard length to do a lie fitting. You determine that the player needs a 38″ 6 iron length. At 38″, the lie angle to produce the same sole contact as it did at the 37.5″ length would be 60 degrees, or 1 degree flatter. If the player needed a 1/2″ shorter club at 37″, the lie would be 62 degrees to get the same sole contact, or 1 degree upright. This assumes the sole contact point of the 6 iron at 37.5 inches was in the center to begin with.
