According to a brief internet search it looks like Golfworks might have had a hand in making the 2010 MacGregor VIP, but I don’t see it on any MPF list. Does anyone know if this head was considered game improvement?

Model: VIP Forged Irons
Material/Mfg: Billet Forged 1020 Carbon Steel 100% CNC Milled Cavities
Introduction: 2010
The legendary VIP irons became the first iron model that Bill Totten oversaw the design work on with help from his teammate David Cersley and an overall design guidance from Golfsmith’s Brandon Ortwein. Kudos to a great looking set. The heads are forged out of a soft 1020 carbon steel with the cavities 100% CNC milled for precise geometric layout, face thicknesses and weight distribution.
Worked with Bill for a lot of years at Golfsmith (1989-2002). Great guy and has a good eye. I don’t doubt the clubs look good. Still, not having measured them, I can’t really know what the actual MPF rating would be. Again, based on the images and information I do have, the longer hosel, shorter blade length and muscle running higher in the cavity, my guess it would fall in the conventional category and not in one of the game improvement categories. Anybody has one out there they want to send me to measure, I would be more than happy to get an official MPF rating.

Was not Golfworks. It was Golfsmith. Did not get a chance to measure as a part of the MPF. I would guess, based on the look and what my experience is with models like this that they designed, it would not be rated too high. Short blade length and longer hosel does not enhance the playability. That might not be fair as I have not measured it, but just my observation. If I can get my hands on one, I will measure it.

Golfsmith 2010
golfsmith acquired MacGregor in 2009. Dick’s acquired Golfsmith in 2016. I would guess that Golfsmith might have had some input on the VIP. I can’t find a VIP made in 2010, but did see some info regarding them in 2008.
