Difficult to compare them since there are so many lofts and sole grind and width variants. Besides, where the Cdim and the vertical cg are very important to determining the playability of irons, in wedges, because the lofts are so high and the strike is such a glancing blow, they really do not factor into the playability. Also, with the shape and size of most modern wedges and the lengths of the hosels, it is very difficult to the cg in the dead center of the face.
We addressed this in the DRT wedges, by using the Ceramic Matrix Composite internally to help optimize the cg location. The design of the Max also optimizes the cg location, but not quite to the degree the CMC allows us to. That being said, neither has the CG absolutely dead in the center. Not a wedge on the market that does. We got very close on the DRT. I measured a 54 degree S grind and the cg is only .072″ off center to the heel. That’s 72/1000. Closer than ay wedges we have measured. Max was slightly more. Again, hosel length, size and shape of the head on wedges make it difficult to get the cg’s absolutely dead center horizontally. Basic vertical cg’s on the 54 degree Max and DRT I measured are similar, with the DRT being slightly lower. Actual vertical slightly lower too, but important to understand that on the DRT we designed different lofts with different mass distribution, with more mass higher on the higher lofts to help control ball flight.
Horizontal CG’s would seem short compared to a #6 iron, but that is because of the wedge shape, the loft and the hosel length. Max is a little larger profile so it’s Cdim was slightly longer than the DRT, but again, and I can’t emphasize this enough when discussing wedges, the Cdim really doesn’t matter or elate to the playability of a wedge.
The best way to understand the playability of wedges is to read Section 12 of Ralph’s book “Golf Club Fitting and Performance – The Principles, Procedures and Playability Factors”. Wedge playability has a lot more to do with the sole width, sole angle and leading edge height than where the cg is. We don’t currently have the book or the wedge information online. Probably should do that. The book is on anyone that is interested in the subject should have, in my opinion.
