Newer clubs coming out, notably Taylor Made and Callaway, have the same length in steel or graphite. Are all club manufacturer’s going this route. Not sure what length to cut clubs when doing shaft replacements. Can you help?
In the past, companies would make graphite shafted clubs longer to simply maintain swingweight when using the lighter graphite shafts. They did not want to make to different weight sets of heads to achieve an acceptable swingweight. By making the graphite shafted clubs longer, they could use the same heads for steel and graphite. Although we kind of followed that thinking, I would say that today we would fit the length to fit the player, no matter what shaft material you are using. If you have to adjust the headweight, then that’s what you do. I would not suggest making the club longer just to achieve a swingweight. That is what we would do when fitting a person. That being said, if a person brought in a graphite shafted club to be reshafted and we were not going through a fitting, I am going to make it whatever length it was to match his set.
