I have been told Hogan Apex shafts (1970s and 1980s) tend to play firmer – the regular (3) plays more like a stiff. Is that the case, and if I soft step 2 times (a 5 iron shaft in a 7 iron shaft) what is the probable result?

@solly. Played a lot of Hogans for years. Apex 3 was definitely a standard regular. 4 was stiff. Good luck with the soft step if you chose to do so.

I would not agree, nor would our other resident expert Jim (both of us have been around long enough to remember, and we both played the Apex shafts for a time back in the day). We would tell you they played pretty much true to the traditional flex designations. So, if you soft stepped them once, probably looking at 1/3 of a flex. Twice, 2/3’s of a flex. That’s putting a #5 iron shaft in a #6 iron head or a #7 iron head respectively.

Thanks Britt. I must admit they always seemed close to what they were labeled. I was thinking of soft stepping somewhat because I’m not as young as I used to be, and the ball doesn’t go as far. (And I really do not want to go away from the Apex shafts – great shafts) Appreciate the input.
