Got fitted for irons yesterday and got a bunch of recommendations about clubs I should check out. We didn’t actually fit me for a specific set of clubs. That being said, I’ve always been really interested in the Maltby line so I’m curious if there is an iron head that would be similar to the fitter’s recommendations.

His suggestion was a players distance iron. He specifically recommended the TM P790, Cobra Forged Tec, Mizuno Hot Metal Pro, Ping i500, or Srixon Z585 (I told him that I’d be buying used or DTC).

Extra stiff, True Temper Dynamic Gold 120 shaft. Extra 0.5”; bent 2 degrees upright.

Are there any Maltby iron heads that would fit the bill? Was looking at the TS-1 (or possibly the TS-1 IM) but open to any and all options.

How do the True Temper Score shafts compare to the Dynamic Golds? Would love to get an iron pak if I can but realize that I may need to build my own clubs to get the shafts I want/need.

Agree with theblake7 that it’s odd they threw a lot of model choices at you. Generally a “fitting” is to determine what product and the specs are right for you. Anyway, I won’t compare any of our clubs to the ones listed and neither should you. The specifications are what matters, and of course the look and style you want. We have players cavity options (TS2, TS3), players blade options (TS-1, TS1-IM, TS4). Interesting they said “players distance irons”. If you have the speed for a Dynamic Gold 120 X-stiff shaft, distance should not be a concern. Control of your trajectory and spin and hitting your distance gaps are what you should focus on, in my opinion. Basically the modern lofts of most designs that are considered “players” clubs are stronger today than years past, so optimizing distance is kind of built in to the newer designs. We are basically 27 degrees to 29.5 degrees lofts on #6 irons in the sets I listed above. The TS2 is 27 and the TS4 is 29.5. We have the legacy models like the TE and the DBM that are 31 and 30 respectively if you want the older loft progressions. In looking at our models, I would examine the TS1,2,3,4 and IM. They are our latest, have been extremely successful for us, and offer different profiles for you to consider. Good idea to may try a #6 or #7 iron in a model or two before investing in the entire set.

As far the Score LT shafts compared to the Dynamic Gold 120, the Score is not as stiff and really can’t be trimmed to an X flex.

If they have recommended that many models then they havent given any consideration to the uniqueness of each one. For example some might have higher or lower COG, different offset, different bounce.

That should tell you one of two things, they are throwing darts at the wall, or it doesnt matter. At your clubheadspeed, vertical COG location might matter a lot.

I suggest you buy 2 or 3 Maltby heads and build replica 7 irons and test thoroughly. ( you can reuse the shafts later).

Thats gonna add $50-100 to your purchase and worth much more in the end.
