Tried to correct a typo in the first thread and seem to have deleted it, apologies.

I am looking at Maltby TE+ and TS4. Will be getting test clubs to trial them.

First I am going to a fitting. I live rural Canada – no specialist fitters within 5 hours drive. So I am going to a local golf club and being fit there. However, I expect they will steer the fitting towards trying to sell me $2000+ irons- not what I am looking for. I am primarily interested in getting swing metrics so that I choose the correct shaft, lie, and length (I am 6’4″) for the test clubs. Any advice on how to approach this fitting? Should I be writing down swing speeds etc?

My current irons are Callaway RAZR-X forged – have had them for 10-15 years, but probably only 100-150 rds on them, I play no more than 10 rounds a year at a bit better than bogey golf. I am less busy these days, so looking to get myself a modern set. I also think my current irons are too far extended – extensions vary from 0.75″ on the wedges up to 1.5″ on the 3 and 4-irons.

I think going to get fit by a qualified fitter would be the place to start. Getting the length, lie, grip style and size, shaft type and flex are the basics we would need to build you a test club to your specs. Of course they will most likely try to sell you what they promote and that is understandable, but the metrics that are arrived at during the fitting should enable you to pass n that information to us and get you a test iron or two to try. TE+ and TS4 are great designs and do very well for us. TS4 are the best iron I have ever played, but of course I am a little biased. They are both traditional blade profiles, so if that is what you like, either would be a good choice. If you want another option to consider that is a great iron, a little more forgiving and happens to be our best selling iron, you might take a look at the TS3. A little different profile, but we have all levels of players having great success with it.

Get your specs and then let us build you some test clubs. I am confident we can build you clubs, to your specifications, that you will be very pleased with.

Thank you for the response Britt. Yes the TS3 was the first Maltby iron I read about. Digging deeper I was drawn to the TE+ over the TS3 because my first set of irons were Hogan Edge hand-me-downs from my grandfather and there are some evident similarities there with the TE+! Published-statistics wise, the TE+ and TS3 seem very similar to each other, so it was remembering my first irons that made me lean towards the TE+.

I see most triallers before me have grabbed a 7i or 8i for their trial. For me, I have never struggled to hit the shorter irons, rental clubs or my own sets over the years. I was thinking to use 6i’s for the trial… this would be comparable in loft to my 5i currently. So it may well be a better test for me and likely more indicative of if the TS4s are too much player and not enough improvement for what I need.

Significant differences between the Maltby offerings and my current RAZR X’s are that the Maltbys have about half the bounce, and are about 10% wider. I think having this reduced bounce is a benefit to a swing that typically sweeps? Thanks for your help!
6 or 7 irons are fine for a test. They both are considered mid irons and should be good for demo purposes.

The sole angle, or bounce, we design into our irons are exactly what they should be. I don’t understand why some of the major OEM’s are putting a lot more bounce on irons. I plan to ask them one day. Generally, when sole widths are slightly wider, you need less bounce as the wider sole actually provides benefits by increasing the effective bounce. I would not be concerned if our bounce numbers are slightly less.
