I’m trying to remove a Taylor Made (SIM2) adaptor from a GD Tour AD shaft (using a graphite shaft extractor) but not having any luck getting the epoxy bond to break loose. I verified that my heat gun is set correctly and functioning properly. I do not believe this is a factory installed adaptor and I’m not sure what kind of epoxy was used but I’ve never had an issue removing a Taylor Made adaptor. Do I need to be concerned about causing potential damage to the shaft due to applying heat for extended periods? Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

I use a small butane Torch. Heat gun gives me grief.
If you are using a small Torch, and have heated up the adapter more than a couple of times, the shaft tip is probably toast. Heat gun is more forgiving. Good luck.

Absolutely safe. Just keep your heat moving and in short 15-20 second intervals.

Butane torch is the way to go! Like others have mentioned, do it in 15-20 second intervals then pull. Keep doing it until the epoxy breaks free. The potential danger is that butane heats up much faster than a heat gun so you just have to get the technique down. Also, I’ve removed tips from the same shaft 4-5 times and it’s still in perfectly good condition.

Couple of questions. Are you trying to save the ferrule? That could be holding you up a little.

Does your shaft puller have sufficient pressure on it? Spring loaded shaft puller?

I’ll usually try to rotate the adapter so the shaft sits in the most level position possible. If the adapter is rotated at all it might be pushing up or down at an angle.

hopefully you’re using the adapter kit with the bolt and the big washer that threads into the adapter? Not pushing against the top of the adapter?

I’ve tried most of these…broken ferrule loose from from the adaptor; the shaft puller is spring loaded, using the adaptor kit w/bolt & washer, and pretty sure I’ve applied enough pressure on it to work. I didn’t think about the angle of the adaptor though. I’ll try that…thanks so much for the suggestions!
