We don’t consider our blade lengths to be a size. They are what they are to provide the optimum stability and playability for the category of design we are working in. Historically, “blades” have been too short to provide any kind of stability, or playability, based on the simple and factual aspects of the mass and dimensional characteristics and how these design characteristics affect the playability. When I am asked why a certain iron from a certain manufacturer has a lower MPF number, many times (especially in the “blade” or “players cavity” category) it is because the blade lengths are too short and the hosels are too long. Why there are companies that still design clubs that way is beyond me. They know, but I think they simply design to a look and disregard sound design principles. I actually know that is what they do. There are some beautiful looking models out there that are basically not good choices for the majority of players. I think many good players or tour players say they want this and that and the this and that they get results in small blades with long hosels and will only be functional if they hit it on the cg perfectly every time. Even the best players don’t. Also, the cg is rarely where it should be on those models. Anyway, I think if you want to compare, I would suggest you use our blade lengths as the marker. Shorter, will most likely get you less playability. Longer, will most likely get you more. Our TS1, TS3, TS4 and TS1-IM #6 iron blade lengths are 3.153″-3.161″. That is the sweet spot we believe for maintaining an awesome look and profile for a “players” design, with category leading playability. The KE4 MAX iron is 3.285″ is provides Ultra Game Improvement playability.
I haven’t seen OEM’s publish blades lengths, or anything related to dimensions on iron designs. I don’t think we ever will. Rlafoone is correct in that the size of the design, or blade length, is subjective and one players perfect blade length is too short, or too long for another. We simply are stating that we believe, based on immutable design principles, there is a proper length that provides the best combination of looks and playability.

I’m new to Maltby and also agree with this post, if we can have a comparison chart of some sort that would be wonderful. Thanks.
