I ask the following question and the answer I received from Jim Y. mainly concentrated on “A” Flex recommendations. But would it be better to go with a “Wedge Specific” shaft in an “R” Flex because the courses here in Utah mainly have a very heavy coarse Sand and the accuracy might be better with less flex,

Any Suggestions?

I would like to reshaft a pair of “Spin Milled Vokey
Wedges” 54° & 58°. They have the T.T. Dynamic Gold Wedge S-200 shafts now. I have Taylormade Speedblade with Matrix 55 “A” flex shafts Which Shafts would you Recommend?

in your answer back to Michael you had mentioned that they are not taper tip. I have installed the AXE shafts in taper tip heads with great success. I simply taper the shaft tip on the grinder till it fits in the head. There isn’t that much material to remove and I have never had any issues or failures. I had spoke to the owner Robin Arthur and he said it would not weaken the shaft in doing so. The tip gets filled with epoxy during installation anyways, I have never had any problems. And those wedge shafts are excellent.

As Britt said, you want one that feels good to you since flex is not as vital in wedges, unless you’re a very strong player. Since you have graphite shafts in A flex in your irons, I think you’d enjoy the XCaliber wedge shaft in the 85 gram version. Thanks Michael,

Those are the shafts that I would love to use, but unfortunately the Vokey Wedges use a “Taper Tip” shaft. I did take both of your advice and ordered the Xcaliber Taper Tip iron shafts in the “Stiff” flex because they are 85gm. I have found I like the shafts on my wedges a little heavier, but not as heavy as the “Gold Dynamic” steel shafts. I guess I have gotten use to having my clubs a little lighter, but my last set had 55gm shafts and were to light around the green.

A shaft does not flex enough in sand shots around the green to effect accuracy. Flex and weight do effect the feel of the club and can influence the way you swing the club, but if you are concerned mainly about shots around the green and out of the sand, I would go with the weight of shaft that gives you the best feel. I do not believe it will make much difference what the flex will be (either the R or the A), as long as the weight is what feels best for you. Wedge specific shafts, depending on the brand, can be S, or R, or in between S and R, usually Those stating that they promote a lower and more controlled trajectory are usually on the stiffer side.
